Description
A gem in the landscape, this is the single-trunk tree form topiary version of the Calgary Carpet Juniper, a spreading coniferous evergreen shrub with soft bright green foliage perched atop a single trunk. If left to grow with no trimming, the head of this tree may grow to around 12 inches tall by 5 to 6 feet wide, but most folks give it a trimming once or twice a year to create a more formal domed/umbrella shape 2.5 to 3 feet wide. Excellent as a specimen in smaller garden spaces, rock gardens and containers. Two can be used to accentuate an entryway. Exceptionally easy to grow, it tolerates a wide range of soil types, except for wet ones, is cold tolerant to -40F and heat tolerant to Zone 8b, and is highly drought tolerant when established.
Landscape & Garden Uses
The Calgary Carpet Juniper Tree is ideal for use in the landscape or in pots, planters and other containers as a specimen or to accentuate entryways. Two can be used to frame an entryway. A fine addition to conifer gardens, topiary gardens, Asian gardens, rock gardens and the Xeriscape (low water needs).
Growing Preferences
Calgary Carpet Juniper is exceptionally easy to grow in a wide variety of well-drained soils and full sun, however will tolerate some light shade. Plants growing in the ground are exceptionally drought tolerant when established. When growing in containers make sure to choose a pot with a drainage hole(s) and use a well-draining potting mix/soil, watering only enough to keep soil damp. Constantly soggy or wet soil can cause root rot or other harmful plant diseases. Does not require pruning but most folks give it a couple trimmings a year to achieve a more formal shape. Trim as desired for shaping purposes and size in late winter and again in early summer.
