Description
Bearing an abundance of upright spikes covered in fragrant, clove-scented creamy white flowers for up to six weeks during the hottest part of summer, and a favorite of hummingbirds, butterflies and other pollinating insects, Hummingbird Clethra, commonly called Summersweet, is an exceptionally versatile, hardy and easy-to-grow North American native shrub. The bright flowers stand out beautifully against the glossy, oval-shaped dark green leaves that turn yellow in fall. More compact than the species, Hummingbird grows to only 2 to 3 feet in height with an equal spread. As with other Clethra, this one will tolerate boggy soils but also adapts well to drier conditions. In consistently moist soils it will spread by stolons to form a colony. Grows well in full sun or shade.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing upright to about 2 to 3 feet tall and wide, Hummingbird Clethra is most useful in sunny landscape beds with moisture retentive soil, though it will tolerant a fair amount of shade and dry soil conditions. Plant it near windows or around outdoor living areas where the fragrance can be enjoyed. In consistently moist soils it will spread by stolons to form a colony. A fine addition to butterfly and hummingbird gardens, white theme gardens, fragrance gardens, bog gardens, wildlife gardens and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 2 to 3 feet for groupings or mass plantings
Growing Preferences
Hummingbird Clethra is a very easy plant to grow and is free of any pest and disease problems. It grows best in consistently moist, slightly acid soils in sun to part shade however tolerates a range of conditions including shade, wet soil, and salt spray.

Will be planting them soon.I really like that larger plants can be ordered. I prefer the gallon and up; especially the larger sizes too, do not have to go thru the SCL-sleep,creep,leap

The Clethra arrived a robust, healthy, gorgeous plant in bloom. The Clethra transitioned into an environment and soil very different from whence it came. Like all the plants & trees I have ordered from Wilson Bros. Gardens it is spectacular, healthy, carefully shipped and delivered on time. However, it is the quality of the plants & trees from Wilson Bros. Gardens that is the reason I am a committed returning customer. ————————- WBG Reply: Hi Joyce – Thanks so much for taking the time to provide your review of the Hummingbird Summersweet Clethra plant and for your compliments! The plants arrived in beautiful condition! They were carefully packed in eco-friendly packaging that protected the branches and kept the soil in the generously filled pots. The plants were larger and bushier than I was expecting, and were very healthy. I was delighted by both plants and service. —————— WBG Reply: Hi Katherine – Thanks so much for your review of the Hummingbird Clethra plants and for the compliments!
