Description
A dwarf non-fruiting male form with dense and sturdy branching, the ‘Jade Butterfly’ features the darkest green leaves among all Ginkgo trees. The butterfly wing shaped leaves form in dense bunches at the ends of stems, which is unique and highly attractive characteristic among the species. Leaves turn a brilliant golden-yellow that is a little darker than other cultivars. Because this is a more recent introduction we’re not sure exactly the ultimate size, but the oldest known specimen reached around 10 feet in 10 years. Very easy-to-grow and extremely long-lived, Jade Butterfly makes for an outstanding specimen to show off in smaller garden spaces or large planters.
Note: All of our Ginkgo trees are males, which means they won’t have the less-than-desirable smelly fruits that smell like gym socks. Needless to say, we always suggest to plant male Ginkgo cultivars!
Landscape & Garden Uses Â
Growing slowly to an estimate of around 12 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide, 8 feet tall or so in 10 years, the Jade Butterfly Dwarf Ginkgo is ideal for growing in containers or as an accent tree in small garden spaces and home foundation plantings. Also excellent for rock gardens. When planted near a patio or other outdoor living spaces it is sure to be a conversation piece!
Suggested Spacing:Â Best as a specimen
Growing Preferences
One of if not the easiest trees to grow, the Ginkgo adapts well to adverse growing conditions in urban areas. It is remarkably free of diseases, is insect resistant, and exceptionally drought tolerant when established. It adapts well to most soil types, even clay, and won’t be bothered by moist or dry soil conditions. Soil pH is of no concern as Ginkgo trees perform well in both acid and alkaline conditions. Avoid pruning other than to remove damaged branches or lower branches to expose more trunk.

The Jade Butterfly Ginkgo arrived with all branches in tact and as tall as advertised. I was concerned ordering a tree late season that it would be a snoopy Christmas tree, but it is both in good form and healthy. The variety is one of two that are midsize ginkgos, most are large or dwarf miniature. I was pleased to find this variety available to fit a 10 foot space by my deck. I cut a piece of bark wrap and sprayed it with deer out to deter investigatory nibbled. So far so good.———————————-Thanks for the photo. We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! And thanks for the kind words and wonderful review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG

This tree made me so happy. It was even more lovely than I expected when it arrived in its well-packaged box. I shared pictures with my friends like it was a cute baby photo. Instructions for planting were easy to understand and I look forward to watching it grow.————————————————————-Thanks so much for the photos. Meet Samwise, my lovely little ginkgo tree. Amazed at how well packaged it was. Seemed not a leaf disturbed even though the box was a little beaten. I’d never before had a nursery order arrive in such great condition. (Though I’d never purchased something near this price before either.). I’d had the hole prepped and timing and weather conditions allowed me to set him in place within 2 hours of arrival. Still need to stake him, but “Sam” seems happy.—————————————–Yay Sam!! We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! Thanks for the kind words and great review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
The tree arrived quickly, packaged extremely well, and looked unscathed after being shipped a thousand miles! I was so excited when I opened the box to find a beautiful jade butterfly ginkgo! Not even a leaf had dropped in the box during shipping! I will definitely be purchasing future plants from Wilson Bros Gardens! So, so pleased with my purchase.——————————————-Wow!
