Description
Commonly called Japanese Yellow Rose, Japanese Kerria or Marigold Bush, Kerria japonica ‘Pleniflora’ is a shade-loving flowering shrub that has been around for a long, long time. We’ve had and enjoyed it for years growing in our gardens and finally decided it was a shame not to grow such a wonderful plant to offer to our customers. Of course the pom-pom-like bright golden-yellow flowers are the biggest appeal, but the foliage, stems and form are also nice. Thousands of bright golden-yellow marigold like flowers are produced in spring almost covering the arching stems and blackberry bush-like foliage. Occasionally you’ll see a rebloom in summer. All-in-all, Pleniflora Kerria is one attractive flowering shrub that is perfectly suited for shady to partially shaded woodland borders and other shady sites.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 8 to 10 feet tall and 6 to 10 feet wide, ‘Pleniflora’ Kerria is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings or as a natural hedge in shady to partially shaded woodland and flowering shrub borders. Also suitable for growing in pots, planters and other containers. A fine addition to yellow theme gardens, cut flower gardens, cottage gardens and perennial gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 5 to 6 feet apart for solid hedges; 12 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preference
Japanese Kerria is easy to grow in most any moist but well drained loamy soils of average fertility and part shade to full shade. Morning and late evening sun is okay but direct afternoon sun causes flowers to be pale in color. Amend heavy clay soils to improve drainage. Kerria blooms on old wood from the previous year so make sure to wait to prune until after flowering. May form suckers but these can be easily removed.

The Kerria japonica ‘Pleniflora’ (Japanese marigold) arrived looking a little stressed; some of the leaves had fallen off. But, I think many shade-loving plants are a bit delicate – especially in this year’s heat. It arrived well-packed and the soil was still moist. Because our temperatures were in the mid-90’s, I set the pot in the shade for a few days. It has been in the ground, in full shade, now for a little over a week. It’s looking very healthy and has several new leaves.———————————————–We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy your purchase for years to come! I’ve previously grown Kerria and loved it because it tolerated heavy clay soil and a moderate amount of full sun (I kept it watered when hot and dry weather) and is a prolific bloomer plus the foliage is a beautiful thick lush feathery soft green that grows fuller when cut back a bit. So I was thrilled to find it again for my new home. The plant arrived the first week of April with healthy green leaves and several flowers too! The bees immediately found it so this plant is a win win for people and bees!————————————————————We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! This plant was sold out everywhere- much to my frustration. I ordered it elsewhere- at twice the price. The plants I got from the other on line nursery were puny and I still didn’t get them for two months!
The Wilson Bros folks notified me these were back in stock and the plant I got was 4 times bigger than the more expensive plant from the other nursery.

Yellow flowering bush.
I received this, and planted it in March, 1 gallon size. 4 weeks later it is blooming. It is planted in FULL shade on the north side of my house. I am so happy to have a yellow bloomer in shade.
