Description
Commonly called Japanese Yellow Rose, Japanese Kerria or Marigold Bush, Kerria japonica ‘Pleniflora’ is a shade-loving flowering shrub that has been around for a long, long time. We’ve had and enjoyed it for years growing in our gardens and finally decided it was a shame not to grow such a wonderful plant to offer to our customers. Of course the pom-pom-like bright golden-yellow flowers are the biggest appeal, but the foliage, stems and form are also nice. Thousands of bright golden-yellow marigold like flowers are produced in spring almost covering the arching stems and blackberry bush-like foliage. Occasionally you’ll see a rebloom in summer. All-in-all, Pleniflora Kerria is one attractive flowering shrub that is perfectly suited for shady to partially shaded woodland borders and other shady sites.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 8 to 10 feet tall and 6 to 10 feet wide, ‘Pleniflora’ Kerria is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings or as a natural hedge in shady to partially shaded woodland and flowering shrub borders. Also suitable for growing in pots, planters and other containers. A fine addition to yellow theme gardens, cut flower gardens, cottage gardens and perennial gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 5 to 6 feet apart for solid hedges; 12 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preference
Japanese Kerria is easy to grow in most any moist but well drained loamy soils of average fertility and part shade to full shade. Morning and late evening sun is okay but direct afternoon sun causes flowers to be pale in color. Amend heavy clay soils to improve drainage. Kerria blooms on old wood from the previous year so make sure to wait to prune until after flowering. May form suckers but these can be easily removed.

These were so hard to find last year. I was really glad to see I was able to order them in what is still winter here in the NW. They came beautifully packed. I was worried when they were dropped off on my front porch upside down. But the way they were packed, no dirt spilled, the soil was packed with moisture and they are already in bloom, far ahead of when these normally start opening their yellow flowers here in the NW. But they are well protected until they go into the ground in another month or two. In the meantime, I’ve got four very mature and healthy plants to check in on every few days. Thank you!———————————————————-We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy them for years to come! Thanks for the kind words and great review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
Just a shout out to tell you how wonderfully the plants I ordered (6 – 3 gallon pots) were delivered. The plant I received was a good size for the pot, in excellent health, and not rootbound so planting out was breeze. As summers in my (formerly) temperate region continue to be hotter I’ve shifted almost all landscape planting to the fall, but it’s harder to find plants in stock. Fortunately Wilson Bros had the kerria I wanted and I could get it in the ground at the perfect time. I’ll definitely be back!———————————————We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! Thanks for the kind words and great review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG

I live in an area with lots of trees and therefore lots of shade, so I am always on the lookout for plants that can thrive with little sun. I’m hoping this Japanese Kerria will be happy in this environment. It arrived well packaged, in excellent condition and within the expected timeframe. It is doing well so far. Will know better next spring if it enjoys its new home.————————————————-We are so glad you are pleased with your purchase! Thanks for the great review! Beth | WBG 🙂

I have just recently found Wilson Brothers in my online search for a Japanese Kerria bush, difficult to find in my area. Because of my location away from any large nursery, I frequently have to order online. I received the Kerria quickly , and it was wrapped in layers of paper, tape, and protection. Th plant was very healthy and blooming when it got here. This company will be a major “go to” for online plants in the future.————————————————————We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! Unique packaging caused plant to arrive in great shape. Arrived quicker than other things bought on line. Bought 3 gallon size-root ball was 3 gallon, but plant was smaller. Still, very healthy and thriving. Blooming now-mid July.. I used to have a large thicket of this plant but two consecutive polar vortexes killed it. It is a stunning mid-summer yellow-long bloomer in a garden.———————————–We are so glad you are pleased with your purchase! Thanks for the great review! Beth | WBG 🙂
I bough one 2 years ago from Wilson Bros, and it has turned out very beautiful and healthy. I bought 2 more this year, and they were both shipped without damage and healthy.————————————–We are so glad you are pleased! Beth | WBG
